1121 At Symphony Square is a 7-story office tower nestled between Austin’s Waller Creek Greenbelt and the historic Symphony Square Amphitheater, in the heart of Austin’s Red River Cultural District. To complete their vision, the development team wanted artwork that embodies all that this unique location represents, with themes of nature, music, and local history.
As art consultants for the project, we collaborated with the developers and design team to select an art package with statement pieces that reflect and reinterpret these themes in ways that feel both organic and unexpected.
From the exterior of the building, a 1500 square-foot mural beckons passersby with colorful, abstract shapes inspired by the wildlife that enlivens Waller Creek, and the vibrant energy of Austin’s music scene. Viewable from blocks away, the mural gives the building an instantly recognizable signature.
Above the lobby and visible from the street, a glass mosaic bluebird sits on a painted mural of native Texas plant life interspersed with colored lines of motion.
Reception and elevator lobbies feature tile mosaics inspired by the surrounding natural landscape. A closer look reveals individual, custom, porcelain “Easter egg” moments honoring the area’s local history, culture and vibe. Abstract murals in the elevator lobby are inspired by three pieces of “elevator music” composed in graphic notation.
All the artwork plays off of each other, incorporating lighter and more saturated shades of 1121 at Symphony Square’s brand colors. Together they tell a cohesive and integrated story, connecting old Austinites and newbies to the history and context of this special place.
